Greenville, S.C. -
Senior Greg Lewis capped his WCU in style, shooting a school-record 211 over three days at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships, played at Furman University's Golf Course. His effort helped the Catamounts to a fifth-place finish, which was the school's first top five at the Championships since 1997.
Western's three-day total of 872 shatters the school record for a three-round event by 19 strokes. This past fall, WCU carded a three-round score of 891 at the Chattanooga Intercollegiate. The total is also 21 strokes better than Western's previous mark at the Championships, shooting 893 last year.
Lewis' five-under, 211 was good enough for fourth (tied) and is six strokes better than the previous school mark of 217 set by Bruce Kulman at the 1991 SoCon Championships. With his effort this weekend, Lewis additionally sets a WCU single-season record with his 74.23 strokes per round in 2001-02. (Kullman also held that record with a 74.42 stroke average in 1990-91.) Lewis finishes his career with a 76.06 stroke average, which ranks third on the WCU all-time list.
The College of Charleston earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships and won its first ever Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship, carding a final-round 283 to finish with a three-day 850 total. In addition, CofC's Daniel Brunson fired a final round 70 to take medalist
honors with a three-round, 11-under par 205.
Furman, which entered the final round with a three-stroke lead over CofC, carded a 291 to finish second by five strokes. Kirk Satterfield paced the Paladins with a three-under 69 and finished second in the individual race with a three-day 208.
Others contributing to Western's success were Lee Cline and Andrew Paduch. Cline fired a final round 73 en route to his three-day total of 218, placing 15th (tied). His 218 ties his own mark as the third-best three-day total in WCU history and is the third-best total by a Catamount at the Championships. Cline finishes his career sixth on the WCU career strokes list with an average of 77.22. Paduch, a freshman, was four-over par (220) at the Championships to place 23rd (tied). His three-round score is the 10th-best by a Catamount all-time and the fifth-best by a Catamount at the Championships. Clay Kilgore shot a 228 to place 36th (tied) and Chase Kress placed 47th (tied) with his total of 236.
