Draper, Va. -
The Western Carolina men's golf team fired a three-under par 285 Tuesday to retain its lead and accomplish a first by winning Appalachian State's 2005 Draper Valley Invitational, carding a two-day total of 582. With the victory over the nine-team field, it marked the first time in school history the Catamounts have won a regulation tournament it did not host.
According to records available, Western Carolina has now won five team titles. The Cats' other medalist honors include winning the 1994 WCU-Maggie Valley Invitational, a rain-shortened 1996 VMI Invitational (one round only), the 2001 WCU-Laurel Ridge Intercollegiate and the 2004 WCU/Shoot-Out at Wild Wing.
Western's 285 on day two additionally stands as the second-lowest, 18-hole score in school history, while its two-day total of 582 is the fourth-lowest, 36-hole total all-time.
Western was led by sophomore Tripp Morrow, who birdied his last four holes to force a playoff for individual medalist honors. While he lost in the playoff, it marked the fifth time in 10 WCU events this season a Catamount has finished regulation as either leader or co-leader. (Morrow won WCU/Shoot-Out at Wild Wing, Keith Tyburski lost in a playoff at the WCU-Sapphire Valley Intercollegiate, Matt Cook won the Tusculum Invitational and Cook lost in a playoff at Winthrop-Waterford Invitational.)
Morrow finished 36 holes with a score of 142 (73-69), which ties for sixth on the WCU all-time list and is the Forest City native's second-lowest two-day total. Cook also had a solid day Tuesday, firing a two-under par 70 for a two-day total of 144 to finish fifth. Blake Wray carded an even par 72 and his 147 was good enough to tie for ninth. Freshman Matt Dowdy improved by two strokes on Tuesday and finished the 36 holes with a 150 to tie for 19th. It marked Dowdy's first tournament during the spring season and his best finish.
Chase Kress rounded out Western's team scoring, carding a 157 for two days. Two Catamounts played the event as individuals with Tyburski tying for seventh (146) and
William Forcier tying for 12th (148).
Charleston Southern set the stage early, firing a tournament low 284 and finishing 36 holes with a total of 589. However, Western answered with its 285 later in the day and its three-stoke lead over Appalachian State on day one turned into a seven stroke victory over the CSU today. Radford finished third, 13 strokes behind the Catamounts, followed by High Point (599) and Appalachian State (604).
Radford's Josh Meador edged Morrow in the playoff to win the event, carding rounds of 72-70 for his 142
Western Carolina will conclude the regular season April 15-17 at the 2005 Southern Conference Championships, hosted by Davidson at River Run Golf and Country Club.
