Draper, Va. - The Western Carolina men's golf team fired a 297 on the first day of the 2005 Draper Valley Invitational to take a three-stroke lead over host team Appalachian State and lead the nine-team field. Keith Tyburski, who is playing as an individual carded an even par 72 to stand in a tie for second, while Western's five team members all placed among the top 20 after 18 holes.

Tripp Morrow, who is tied for sixth, is pacing the Catamounts, shooting 73 on the first day, followed by Matt Cook (74; 7th-t), Chase Kress (75; 10th-t) and Blake Wray (75; 10th-t). Matt Dowdy, who is tied for 17th, carded a 76.

Tyburski is two shots off the lead as Stetson's Ryan Halvorson turned in a two-under 70.

The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
