Catamount Men's Golf Rallies to Fourth-Place Finish at Furman Intercollegiate

Greenville, S.C. - Western Carolina carded the second-lowest score of Sunday's final round with a 291 to rally to fourth-place finish at the 39th annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,800-yard Furman University Golf Course. Senior Matt Cook posted a top 10 finish to lead the Catamounts with a three-day total of 219.

Jonathan Hodge (69-73-71=213) carded a final round 71 to claim individual medalist honors and help Chattanooga edge Clemson (292-291-294=877) by three strokes. South Carolina finished third with a three-day total of 882, followed by Western Carolina and Vanderbilt tied for fourth at 888 to round out the top five squads.

The tournament field included five nationally-ranked teams, including a sixth from the NCAA Division II in USC-Aiken, according to GolfStat rankings. WCU was able to finish ahead of 30th-ranked Virginia Tech and 41st-ranked North Florida, was well as USC-Aiken.

Also, the Catamounts finished second out of the seven SoCon schools competing at the event behind UTC; Furman finished tied for 8th; Elon 14th; Wofford 18th; Appalachian State 20th; and Davidson 24th.

Cook carded his best round Sunday afternoon, firing a one-under 71 to post a top-ten finish tied for seventh with a three-round score of three-over, 219. Junior Andres Cuenca (221) posted the squad's lowest round of the three-day event with a two-under 70 on the final 18 to rally to a 14th-place finish. Cuenca ranked tied for second in both par 5 scoring at nine under and birdies with 13. Cook was one back in the latter category with 12 birdies in the tournament.

Sophomore Ricky Stout was a third Catamount to finish in the top 20 with a 16th-place finish with a three-round, 222. Rounding out the field for WCU were junior Dustin Furnari and freshman Caleb Marsh tied for 79th (231).

Western Carolina returns to action at the UK Bluegrass Classic at the University Club in Lexington, Ky., on April 12-14 in its final tune-up before the SoCon Championship.
