Western Carolina junior Matt Cook carded a two-under, 70, on Friday in the first round of the 38th-Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the 6,825-yard Furman University Golf Club. The Murphy, N.C., native is in the clubhouse tied for sixth. Without its second-leading scorer, sophomore transfer Andres Cuenca, the Catamounts stand 19th after shooting 304 as a team in the first round.
Elon paced the field through 18 holes of the 54-hole event with a one-under 287 Friday morning. Justin Newton fired a four-under 68 to lead the Phoenix to a one stroke advantage over East Carolina and Charleston Southern while securing a first place tie in the individual standings with Andre Thorsen of East Carolina and Stuart Carrihill of Charleston Southern.
Also for WCU, freshman Ricky Stout shot a three-over, 75, to stand tied for 43rd after the first round, with his classmate, Michael Chapin, the only other Catamount to eclipse the 80-stroke barrier with a first round 79 to stand tied for 89th.
Second round action tees off at 8:00 am Saturday morning with teams beginning plat at No. 1 and No. 10.
