Furman Intercollegiate - Round 1 Results
Greenville, S.C. - Western Carolina senior Tanner Briele blistered the course on Friday, firing a tournament-record opening round seven-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead entering the second round at the 41st annual Furman Intercollegiate being held at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Including Briele's career-low round, the Catamounts put two inside the individual top 10 to rank third out of the 24 teams in the overall standings, two strokes off the overall lead after shooting 291.
Briele carded seven birdies in a bogey-free round to establish a new course record on the recently renovated Furman Golf Course and build a three-stroke lead over second place Adam Black of Presbyterian who carded an opening round 68. Chattanooga's Derek Rende fired a three-under 69 to hold third place
Clemson and SoCon-foe, Chattanooga, each shot 289 to stand tied atop the team leader board and hold a two-stroke edge on third place Western Carolina and four-stroke lead on Old Dominion after Friday's round. Presbyterian, Samford and Mississippi rounded out the top seven with four teams tied for eighth place.
Behind Briele, sophomore Kyle Wilson fired an even-par 72 over the opening round to stand in a five-way tie for ninth place. Senior Ricky Stout is tied for 43rd after a four-over 76 on Friday, with Drew Miller (t-70th, 78) and Trey White (122nd, 82) rounding out the Catamount lineup.
Playing unattached as an individual, WCU senior Benjy Davey is tied for 101st after shooting eight-over, 80.
Paired with golfers from Chattanooga and Temple in threesomes, Western Carolina will tee off on the back nine beginning at 8:00 am on Saturday morning. Fans can follow live scoring of the tournament at www.golfstatresults.com.
