Rock Hill, S.C. - Western Carolina freshman Matt Cook, playing just his third collegiate event, finished as the individual leader after 36 holes of golf in his second consecutive tournament, firing back-to-back rounds of 71 for a two-under 142 after two days. However, the Murphy, N.C., native lost in a playoff to Gardner-Webb's Rory McCaughna in the annual Winthrop/Waterford Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Waterford Golf Club. Cook's play helped the Catamounts place eighth in the 15-team field.

Cook becomes the fourth Catamount this season to finish regulation play as a leader. In addition to Cook winning last week at Tusculum, sophomore Tripp Morrow won the WCU Shoot-Out at Wild Wing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and junior Keith Tyburski lost in a playoff at the WCU Intercollegiate at Sapphire Valley in Cashiers. Since 1984, WCU has had a golfer end regulation as a leader 13 times, including three times having players fall in a playoff.

The 142 by Cook stands as the seventh-best, 36-hole score in WCU history. Also, the score by Cook and McCaughna, who fired rounds of 73-69, was three stokes better than third place.

Western's scoring was rounded out by Blake Wray (153; 28th-t), Tripp Morrow (155; 37th-t), Matt Flueckiger (161; 58th-t) and Shawn Costello (177; 81st). The Catamounts finished the 36-holes with a team score of 611.

Tennessee Tech won the team title with a two-day total of 589. The Eagles were followed by Gardner-Webb (592), High Point (595), Jackson State (599) and Lipscomb (601).

The Catamounts will return to action Mar. 25-27 at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., at Furman's University Course..
