Aiken, S.C. - Paced by sophomore J.T. Poston in a tie for 17th overall, the Western Carolina men's golf team is tied for 12th in the standings after 36 holes at the 16th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
The Catamounts posted rounds of 296 and 298 in the first two rounds on Monday, tied with fellow Southern Conference member, Furman, in the clubhouse at 594.
Poston carded rounds of two-over par 72 and three-over 73 on Monday to stand tied with seven others for 17th in the individual standings. The Hickory, N.C., native was tied for 23rd with senior teammate Steven Smith after the opening round two-over 72, advancing six positions in the second round.
Smith shot six-over 76 on the second 18 holes Monday to slip into a tie for 38th entering Tuesday's final round. Freshman Tyler Lail is just a stroke behind Smith after rounds of 74 and 75 for a 149, tied for 43rd through 36 holes.
First-round leader South Carolina holds a one-stroke edge over second-place North Carolina State, 570-to-571. Augusta State and Virginia are tied for third, four strokes off the pace at 574 with Clemson and Liberty tied for fifth at 577 after two rounds of competition.
Mac McLaughlin of Virginia leads the 90 golfer field with a two-round score of five-under par 135 after carding rounds of 71 and 64. USC-Aiken's Matt Atkins is one-stroke back at 136 after consecutive rounds of 68 with Matthew NeSmith of South Carolina rounding out the top three at 137 as only six golfers carded even-par or lower on Monday.
The final round of the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will commence at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
