Buies Creek, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Matt Cook carded five birdies in the opening round to lead the 82-player field by a stroke, firing 69 (34-35) on Monday afternoon at the Lonnie D. Small Spring Classic at the 6,703-yard Keith Hills Country Club. As a team, Western stands alone in sixth place with a 300, seven-strokes behind first round leading Campbell.
Southern Conference foe, Elon, stands in second place after frost on the course delayed the start of the tournament until Noon. The Phoenix are three strokes back at 296, with Radford (297) in third followed by a two-way tie for fourth between Richmond and Gardner-Webb, both five strokes in arrears at 298.
Cook finished three-under on the par 5 holes and was even on the par 4 layouts to pace the Catamounts. Red-shirt freshman Cody Walker shot a three-over 75 (36-39) to stand in a four-way tie for 18th, giving WCU two inside the top 20. Sophomore transfer Andres Cuenca fired a 77 (38-39) to head to the clubhouse tied for 26th, with senior Tripp Morrow tied for 45th (79) and freshman Ricky Stout in a tie for 75th after an 83 on Monday.
On the strength of Cook's five birdies, the Catamounts lead the tournament with 15 and rank second overall in par 5 scoring at four-under (4.80).
Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a 10:00 am shotgun start.
