Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyrie Adams was today selected as the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Adams amassed 433 yards of total offense last Saturday against Mercer while tossing three touchdown passes for a second-consecutive week.
Adams collected the fourth weekly offensive award of his career -- and his third this season, the most of any offensive player in the SoCon this fall. He is one of just two players in the league to have earned three weekly plaudits, joined by Wofford kicker, Luke Carter. It's also the ninth weekly honor by a Catamount this season, fifth by an offensive player.
Adams was also an honorable mention for the STATS FCS national offensive award revealed on Monday afternoon.
Weekly award selections are made by the league office from nominations submitted by the media relations office of each conference school.
Adams threw for a season-high 378 yards on a season-best 35 completions (35-for-47, 74.5%), finishing just one completion shy of matching his career high of 36 set last year in a home win over Gardner-Webb. Combined with 55 yards rushing, the St. Petersburg, Fla., native amassed 433 yards of total offense, a mark that ranks tied for the fifth-most in program history.
For a second-straight week, Adams tossed three touchdown passes as he connected with redshirt seniors Steffon Hill (38 yards) and Terryon Robinson (48 yards), in addition to finding tight end Austin Phillips with his first career score on an eight-yard connection.
Entering the final week of the regular season with 2,225 passing yards, Adams ranks 11th in WCU's single-season record books. Adams also moved passed former QB Willie Perkins (4,449 yards from 1982-86) into eighth-place in career passing yards in school history with 4,793 yards over his first two seasons. With TD passes in all but one game this season, Adams has already surpassed his seasonal TD pass total from his 2016 SoCon Freshman of the Year campaign where he had of 15 TD passes. This year's 21 scoring tosses matches a WCU single-season record held by Jeff Gilbert (1983), while Adams' 36 career TD passes already rank him fourth in program history.
Western Carolina (7-4) plays its final regular season game -- and second against a NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent -- this Saturday (Nov. 18) as the Catamounts visit Chapel Hill and the North Carolina Tar Heels (2-8). Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm and can be heard on the Catamount Sports Network with a 2:00 pm air time while also broadcast on the ACC Network Extra (ESPN3).
