Sechrest Named SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior punter Clark Sechrest was today selected as the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 7, it was announced today. The honor recognizes both athletic and academic achievements by eligible student-athletes in their championship season, and is voted on and released by the league office.

Sechrest is the second Catamount student-athlete to earn the SoCon's weekly student-athlete award, joining women's soccer senior Laura Greb who earned plaudits on Oct. 24.

In last weekend's home finale against Chattanooga, Sechrest punted five times for a season-high average of 50.6 yards, booming three kicks over 50 yards including a career-long 58-yard punt. He additionally downed two of his kicks inside the Mocs' 20-yard line including one at the UTC two-yard line.

Sechrest, who holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.877 while majoring in Engineering Technology, was additionally pressed into placekicking duties last Saturday, connecting on all three point after touchdown attempts and punching though a 36-yard field goal for his first six points of the season.

For his performance, Sechrest was earlier this week named the top special team's player from the SoCon by SouthernPigskin.com - the first weekly honor of his WCU career.

On the season Sechrest currently sits atop the SoCon leader board with 56 punts and ranks third with a 42.4 yard average - a mark that ranks 17th overall in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) statistics. The Cornelius, N.C., native has a SoCon-best 15 punts of 50 yards-or-more and ranks second in the league with a total of 17 punts downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line.

Western Carolina (1-9) is currently amidst its bye week, returning to the gridiron to wrap-up the 2012 season next Saturday, Nov. 17 as it visits the Football Bowl Subdivision's (FBS) top-ranked team, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium is scheduled for 12:21 pm ET / 11:21 pm CT and will be televised on the SEC Network (check local listings for availability).
