Cullowhee, N.C. - Coming off an open date the Catamounts (4-5, 3-4) will face arch rival Appalachian State (5-3, 4-2).
Head Coach Bill Bleil, who addressed the media Monday afternoon at his weekly press conference, feels confident about the scheduling of the off week. "The off week was good for our kids both mentally and physically," said, Bleil.
With the open date behind them the Catamounts will look to close out their conference schedule against arch rival Appalachian state. "This is a big week for our kids. Appalachian State is a great team, they play well, and are a very physical team," said Bleil.
The Mountaineers will bring their 12th ranked offense to E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field on Sat ur day, led by quarterback Joe Burchette. "Burchette is a great player, and Appalachian does a good job of running the ball effectively as well," stated Bleil. Burchette brings a passing efficiency rating of 138.32, and the Mountaineers combine Burchette with a solid run ning attack that averages 206.4 yards per game.
The Catamounts quaterback David Rivers, has accumulated 2,252 passing yards so far this season. Rivers, has thrown for over 300 yards in three straight games, two of which were for 400 yards or more.
The Catamounts hope to bring the Mountain Jug back to WCU, after last year's loss to Appalachian 34-10. This year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Battle For The Old Mountain Jug. The Mountain jug was created by both school's sports information departments and student governments in 1976. This will be the 64th meeting between the two schools, the Mountaineers lead the series 46-17. The Battle For The Old Mountain Jug will take place Saturday at 1 p.m., at E.J Whitmire/Bob Waters Field in Cullowhee, N.C.
