Western Carolina freshman punter Blake Cain was today named Southern Conference Special Teams Player of the Week as announced by the league office.
The honor is the first in Cain's career and the fifth weekly award from the conference for the Catamounts this season. Red-shirt freshman RB Quan Warley has twice been recognized as freshman of the week, with classmate Zack Jaynes also garnering the accolade. Junior LB Quintin Phillips also earned defensive plaudits.
In addition, senior QB Andy Horn was tabbed SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week following the season-opening win over Shorter College.
Cain punted seven times in Western Carolina's 20-point, 27-7, win over Chattanooga for 285 yards, an average of 40.7 yards per punt including a long of 51. He helped the Catamounts win the battle of field position with five of his seven kicks downed inside the Mocs 20 yard line.
On the season, Cain is averaging just under 40 yards per punt with three going 50-yards or more and 14 downed inside the 20 yard line.
Western Carolina returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 8 as it travels to nationally-ranked Elon, which was idle last week. Kickoff from Rhodes Stadium is set for 1:30 pm.
