Western Carolina's Quan Warley Named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week

Oct. 27, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina red-shirt freshman running back Quan Warley was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week today as announced by the conference office. Warley led the Catamount offense in both rushing and receiving while also recording his second career touchdown in Saturday's heart-breaking, 38-31, overtime loss to the Georgia Southern Eagles.

The weekly honor is the second this season for Warley, who garnered his first career accolade after rushing for 202 yards at Presbyterian earlier this year. It is also the fifth weekly award for the WCU football team this season as red-shirt freshman QB Zack Jaynes was named the Freshman of the Week back on Oct. 13; junior LB Quintin Phillips was the league's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15; and senior QB Andy Horn was the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 4.

Warley posted his second career 100-plus yard rushing effort on Saturday against the Eagles, tallying 102 yards on 22 carries with only six touches after intermission, missing a large part of the second half due to injury. He also sliced through the GSU defense for a nine-yard rushing touchdown late in the second quarter, capitalizing on a Mitchell Bell interception and subsequent 32-yard return.

A native of Thomasville, N.C., Warley also led the Catamounts in receiving, hauling in four passes for 50 yards including a career-best, 30-yarder on a critical third down play early in the second quarter that helped spark a WCU scoring drive.

On the season, Warley is averaging 73.3 yards rushing per game to rank fifth in the SoCon and is the highest-ranking freshman. The two-time North Carolina AP High School State Player of the Year also ranks fourth on the team in receiving at 130 yards on the season.

Western Carolina (2-7, 0-5 SoCon) returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 1 as it hosts the Chattanooga Mocs (1-7, 0-4 SoCon) in Cullowhee. Kickoff from E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field is set for 1:00 pm.

WCU will celebrate its Hall of Fame Day this weekend, honoring its five newest inductees into its Athletics Hall of Fame - former football players John Ruta (1962-65), Alonzo Carmichael (1983-86) and Brad Hoover (1996-99) along with track and field star Tony McKennie (1986-90) and baseball standout Jason Beverlin (1992-94).

Also, there will be a special recognition of the 1983 Catamount Football team celebrating the 25th anniversary of its appearance in the NCAA Division I FCS (I-AA) National Championship game.
