Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's Troy Mitchell was today named the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Week as selected and released by the conference office. Mitchell threw for a career-high 175 yards with two touchdowns last Saturday at Elon, guiding a second half Catamount comeback.

Mitchell, who was also named the SoCon's top rookie following his season-opening start against Mars Hill in guiding the Catamounts to the 42-14 victory, picked up his SoCon-leading second rookie of the week honor. He was also named the top freshman for the week in the conference on Sunday afternoon by the staff at SouthernPigskin.com.

Overall, it is the third weekly honor from the SoCon this season, coming one week after senior Rock Williams was named the top defensive player following his 24-tackle performance at The Citadel.

Mitchell, who was sidelined most of the week leading up to the Elon game, took over in the Catamount backfield midway through the second quarter. He completed 13-of-25 pass attempts for a career-high 175 yards and the first two passing touchdowns of his collegiate career. Mitchell found senior wideout Jacoby Mitchell on a 13-yard strike on a fourth down play just before halftime for his first TD through the air, and later hooked up with classmate Spearman Robinson on a 47-yard scoring pitch-and-catch - the longest pass play in the careers of both rookies.

Robinson was selected as an honorable mention for wide receiver accolades by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) released on Monday morning, matching his career-high with nine catches for a career-best 139 yards.

A native of Houston, Texas, Mitchell added a team-high 78 yards rushing on 15 carries - a number that was at 89 yards before a pair of sacks by the Phoenix defense.

Western Carolina plays the first of consecutive home games this Saturday, Oct. 27, as it hosts archrival, Appalachian State, in the annual "Battle for the Old Mountain Jug." Kickoff of the annual gridiron grudge match from E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
