Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina true freshman quarterback Troy Mitchell was today named the Steak `n Shake Southern Conference Freshman of the Week, as selected and released by the staff of SouthernPigskin.com. Mitchell led a second-half comeback for the Catamounts on Saturday at Elon, finishing with a career-high 175 yards passing with two touchdown passes.
It is the second-straight week the group has honored a Catamount player as senior linebacker Rock Williams earned top defensive player honors last week following his career-best 24 tackles at The Citadel.
Entering the game for the first-time late in the first quarter, Mitchell took over in the WCU backfield for starter Eddie Sullivan midway through the second quarter. The Houston, Texas, native completed 13-of-25 passes for a career-high 175 yards and his first two passing touchdowns. He added 78 yards rushing to pace the squad.
With time dwindling before halftime and the Catamounts facing a fourth-and-one situation at the Elon 13 yard line, Mitchell scrambled to keep the play alive before finding senior wide receiver Jacoby Mitchell in the end zone for the score, his first career passing touchdown. The scoring pass came on Troy's 66th career pass attempt.
The TD reception was the 11th in the career of Jacoby Mitchell, four shy of moving into a tie for seventh place with six others with 15 career receiving touchdowns.
Troy Mitchell would add his second career passing touchdown on Saturday, connecting with classmate Spearman Robinson down the right sideline for a career-long pass play of 47 yards. Mitchell ran play-action to his right causing the Phoenix corner to bite, respecting the running ability of the rookie signal caller. Mitchell then stopped and fired down field to a wide-open Robinson who waltzed in untouched for the score.
Western Carolina opens consecutive home games this Saturday, Oct. 27 as it hosts archrival Appalachian State in its annual gridiron grudge match in the "Battle for the Old Mountain Jug." Kickoff from E.J. Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
