Cullowhee, N.C. -
Krista Miller, of Mooresville, N.C., is this week's recipient of four free tickets to a Catamount home game after his question was picked in the weekly "Ask Kent Briggs" promotion. Miller, who has won tickets to the Chattanooga game, asked Western's first-year coach, "Could you explain the redshirt rule, especially in regards to B.J. Jessup and Justin Fryer?"
Coach Briggs's reply was the following. "A player, under NCAA rules, has five years to play four competitive seasons on the field. That extra year can be received if a player has a medically documented injury prior to the fourth game of a season. Many players in football are redshirted their first year so they can become acclimated to college life as well as develop mentally and physically to be a better contributor their remaining four years. In Justin and B.J.'s case, they could possibly receive a sixth year if it is proven that there was a medical hardship situation in two of the five years. Also, a person can get a sixth year if there was a medical situation combined with a personal situation that could merit not competing one of those years."
This week, Western will travel to Wofford for a 1 pm start with the Terriers in Gibbs Stadium. The following week, Western will host Chattanooga at 2 pm as the University celebrates Homecoming week in Cullowhee.
The Western Carolina Department of Athletics will give four free tickets for the upcoming Catamount home game to a lucky fan each week. To qualify, simply click the "Ask Kent Briggs" icon on catamountsports.com and submit your question. If your question is answered, you win.
