Cullowhee, N.C. -
Charlotte resident John Stark is this week's recipient of four free tickets to a Catamount home game after his question was picked in the weekly "Ask Kent Briggs" promotion. Stark, who has won tickets to the Georgia Southern game, asked Western's first-year coach, "How do you receive information to prepare for an upcoming opponent - film exchange, scouting or other?"
Coach Briggs's reply was the following. "With non-league team, we usually have an agreement to trade at least four games of films With Southern Conference teams, we will trade with each school all of our games. We also receive flip cards, play-by-plays and stats that helps us gather important information for individual team performances. We usually call the coach who played our upcoming opponent if the situation allows to get important information such as tempo, speed, strength, size, cadence and attitude. Also, now we gather a lot of information on the internet and daily press clippings on injuries, a coaches' philosophy prior to playing us and general comments and reactions by opposing players and coaches. Finally we analyze our information that we gathered on the team from the previous year. As far as scouting, the NCAA does not allow us to evaluate our opponents in person."
In addition to hosting nationally-ranked Georgia Southern on Oct. 12, Western will have its annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on that Saturday. Keith LeClair, Lori Lyons Wilson, Thomas "Bubba" Wilson, Paul Jones and Clyde Simmons will be this year's inductees. The ceremony is open to the public and is set to start at 10:30 am on the Ramsey Center concourse prior to the Catamount-Eagle contest, which starts at 2 pm.
The Western Carolina Department of Athletics will give four free tickets for the upcoming Catamount home game to a lucky fan each week. To qualify, simply click the "Ask Kent Briggs" icon on catamountsports.com and submit your question. If your question is answered, you win.
