Western Carolina's Quinton Phillips Named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

Oct. 1, 2007

Cullowhee, N.C. - For a third-consecutive week, a Western Carolina Catamount football player has been recognized by the Southern Conference office. Junior transfer Quinton Phillips was today named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week after leading the WCU defense with a career-best 19 tackles last weekend at Georgia Southern.

Phillips was joined by Appalachian State running back Kevin Richardson (26 carries, 158 yards, 1 TD) and Wofford running back Kevious Johnson (14 carries, 118 yards, 3 TDs) who shared Offensive Players of the Week honors; Elon's Michael Mayers (four returns for 225 yards, 1 TD) as the Special Teams Player of the Week; and Georgia Southern running back Chris Teal (20 carries, 64 yards 1 TD) as SoCon Freshman of the Week.

Phillips, a transfer from Louisburg College, finished with six solo tackles and 13 assists at GSU. The Charlotte, N.C., native entered the Georgia Southern game with 26 total tackles through the first four games of the season, nearly doubling his seasonal output in one game.

Keying on Eagle point-man, quarterback Jayson Foster, the Catamount defense limited the senior to 96 yards on the ground and just 99 total all-purpose yards, well below his national-leading average of 248.3 yards per game he held entering the contest. The 96 yards rushing was Foster's lowest output as a starting quarterback since 2005 (he was primarily used as a wide receiver last season) against Morehead State in a game where he ran and passed for a pair of scores in the first half of a rout. Foster, who also led the nation in scoring with an average of 24 points per outing, was limited to one rushing touchdown on a 34-yard scramble.

Last Saturday, Western's defense was on the field for nearly 40 minutes of the 60-minute affair, including a staggering 13:19 in the decisive second quarter alone.

Phillips joins junior place kicker Jonathan Parsons as the second Catamount to combine for WCU's three SoCon weekly awards this season.

The Catamounts return home this Saturday, Oct. 6, to face the Elon Phoenix, who were ranked nationally last week prior to a 49-32 loss at home to the fifth-ranked Appalachian State Mountaineers. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 6:00 pm at E.J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field.
