Cullowhee, N.C. - Just over a week out from the annual Homecoming game at Western Carolina University, the turf replacement project at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field reaches day 13 on Thursday.

The project began just a few hours following the Sept. 13 home game against the nationally-ranked Liberty Flames. Surveyors from the Carolina Green, Corp., of Indian Trail, N.C., took measurements prior to the heavy machinery rolling in just after 11:00 pm. The majority of Sunday was spent removing the old rubbber/sand mixture base.

Over the past week, the endzones which consist of purple turf have been added to the green artificial surface. Also, at midfield the new WCU and Catamount logo spans between the two 40-yard lines.

"The original plan was to have 'Catamounts' in our new font treatment in both end zones," said WCU Athletics Director Chip Smith. "However, the application of the lettering as framed on the actual turf was much different when viewed from the stands than it appeared from the artist rendering and drawings. So, this year the endzones will remain solid purple and we will re-evaluate the situation after the season."

The new turf is a product of the European-based Desso Sports Systems. The actual product consists of a nylon-like woven base interlaced with synthetic "blades of grass" that are approximately two inches in length. The material is sewn together then glued to a base on the ground. Once the turf is in place, it will be back-filled with a mixture of sand and rubber to serve as the "dirt" and provide stability to the turf.

The project is estimated to be completed early next week in anticipation of the Oct. 4 game against Southern Conference newcomer, Samford.
