Quan Warley Earns Southern Conference Freshman of the Week Plaudits

Sept. 22, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina red-shirt freshman running back Quan Warley was today selected as the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Week, as voted upon by a panel that includes sports information professionals from across the league.

The honor is the first of Warley's collegiate career and the third plaudit for the Catamount football team to date. He joins junior linebacker Quintin Phillips, who earned the defensive weekly honor last week (Sept. 15), and red-shirt senior quarterback Andy Horn who was dubbed SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week back on Sept. 4.

Warley rushed for 202 yards on 29 carries to help lead the Catamounts to a 23-21 road win at Presbyterian on Saturday, snapping WCU's two-year old, 14-game road losing skid. He added 17 yards receiving on three catches out of the backfield.

The Thomasville, N.C., native became just the eighth different Catamount to surpass 200 yards rushing in a single-game, eclipsing the century mark for the first time in his collegiate career. His performance was also just the 10th, 200-yard rushing performance in school history and WCU's first since Fred Boateng rushed for 213 against Georgia Southern in 2000.

Warley is also the third freshman to rush for 200 yards in school history joining Darryl Jackson (vs. Mars Hill, 200 yards, 10/10/87) and Darius Hooks (vs. Wofford, 203 yards 9/14/96). His 200-yard rushing performance was also the best individual outing in the Southern Conference thus far this season and the seventh-best in all of NCAA FCS football.

Western Carolina (2-2) returns to the gridiron this Saturday, Sept. 27 as it visits Charleston, S.C., and The Citadel (2-1) to open Southern Conference play at the newly renovated Johnson Hagood Stadium. The Catamounts will look to end both a 15-game SoCon losing skid which dates back to 2005 and a four-game slide against the Bulldogs.

Saturday's game will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard locally on WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee or 680 AM WRGC in Sylva. Fans can also listen to the broadcast on 1480 AM WPFJ, The Dove in Franklin; 1590 AM WBHN in Bryson City; and 1600 AM WTZQ in Hendersonville.
