Sept. 11, 2017

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior running back Detrez Newsome was today named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for games played Sept. 7-9. Newsome spearheaded a strong offensive performance that saw the Catamounts amass a school-record 778 yards in the 63-17 victory over Davidson at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.

Newsome was also an honorable mention for the STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week award which was announced Monday afternoon. He also collected the SoCon's weekly award as selected by College Sports Madness.

It is the second-consecutive week to start the 2017 season that WCU has earned a weekly honor as Newsome joined redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyrie Adams who scored the same honor in week one. The weekly award is the fifth of his career, third as the top offensive player of the week. He collected both special teams and freshman of the week honors back in 2014 with a weekly offensive nod once in both 2015 and 2016.

Newsome carried the ball just 15 times in breaking his own school-record for rushing yards in a single-game, eclipsing the 277 he set last season against Chattanooga with 288 yards on the ground Saturday - the sixth-best single-game mark in SoCon history. He additionally set a personal record with three rushing scores including long runs of 78 and 88 yards to bookend his scoring. The Raeford, N.C., native added one kickoff return for 21 yards for a total of 309 all-purpose yards in the winning effort, surpassing the 100 all-purpose yard mark for a 16th-consecutive game.

With three rushing touchdowns last Saturday, Newsome has 31 in his career, the third-most in program history. When combined with his seven career receiving scores and two on kickoff returns, Newsome became WCU's all-time leader with 40 career touchdowns, by-passing Darrell Lipford (1974-77, 38 career TDs, 38 rushing, 3 receiving).

After pacing three of the four NCAA divisions in all-purpose yards a year ago, Newsome currently leads the NCAA in that same category in 2017, averaging 217.0 yards per game. He additionally ranks fourth in the nation in rushing average (157.5 yds/gm) and is third in average yards per carry (10.86).

Western Carolina (1-1) travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., and Spangler Stadium to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs (0-2) this Saturday with kickoff at 6:00 pm. Tickets for Saturday's game in the WCU section can be purchased through the WCU Athletics Ticket Office by calling (800) 34-GOWCU or (828) 227-2401.

In addition to the Catamount Sports Network coverage which begins at 5:00 pm, fans can also watch the game locally on My40, WMYA-TV with a simulcast stream available online on the Big South Network (

Adams Recognized by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA):
Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams was an honorable mention for the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Week in week two. He matched the record he also tied in last year's home-opening victory over Gardner-Webb.

All told, Adams completed 10-of-13 passes for 274 yards including a long of 67 in a scoring strike to Terryon Robinson in the winning effort.
