Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina head football coach Kent Briggs announced today that junior defensive back B.J. Jessup will miss six-to-eight weeks after fracturing his collar bone at Auburn.
Jessup (Elkin, N.C./Elkin HS) had started the first two games of the 2002 season at cornerback. He tallied two tackles versus the Tigers before the injury and had four tackles with an interception and pass break up the previous week at Liberty.
"B.J. will be hard to replace," Briggs said. "I feel confident in Randy Thompson's ability to step in play corner, but that leaves us with less experience as a back up. Also, B.J. is a real 'football player' who is physically tough and has good instincts. He plays a key role when we go to our nickel package (putting extra defensive backs on the field)."
In other injury news, two-time All-Southern Conference running back Fred Boateng is expected to see action as the Cats host West Virginia Tech in their 2002 home opener. Boateng, a junior from Falls Church, Va., missed the first two games after having scar tissue removed from the same knee which he had surgery on this past spring.
