Cullowhee, N.C. - This week marks the first anniversary of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, which has come to known simply as 9-11. Like the people around the United States and the world, the Western Carolina community was deeply moved on that day and wants to continue to show its support.
On Sept. 11 this week, the campus had a day of remembrance with a ceremony to mark the events and a musical tribute to the heroes.
On Saturday, when the Western Carolina football team hosts West Virginia Tech, approximately 200 members of local police and fire departments, as well as members of the military, will be honored for their service prior to the 6 pm kickoff. After the game, there will be a fireworks show, sponsored by Jackson Paper and 5th Avenue Travel of Hendersonville.
Tickets for the WCU-West Virginia Tech game are still available and may be purchased at the Ramsey Center or by calling (828) 227-7338 at toll free at (800) 34GOWCU. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the game at the Ramsey Center handicap entrance across from the Episcopal Church. The ticket office on the Ramsey Center concourse will open at 11:00 am. Those members of the fire and police departments who have not received a complimentary pass, please contact the WCU ticket office.
