Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina senior quarterback Andy Horn was today named the Southern Conference's Student-Athlete of the Week for his performance last week, the first full week of competition this season. The honor is the first of Horn's career and the first for WCU this season.
Each week, the SoCon recognizes outstanding student-athletes for their work both on-and-off the playing fields.
The Charlotte, N.C., native made just his second career start - and only his second career appearance - in last Thursday's, 35-0, home opening win over the Shorter College Hawks. The win for WCU snapped a seven-game losing skid dating back to last season, and was the first for first-year head coach Dennis Wagner.
Horn found a rhythm early as he completed 22-of-33 passes for 262 yards, while also tossing his first two TD passes in the win. Late in the first quarter, he hooked up with red-shirt sophomore Marquel Pittman from six yards out, and found classmate Donald James for a 14-yard score - the first receiving touchdown in James' career.
This week statistically, Horn leads the Southern Conference in terms of total offense (267 yds/gm) and passing (262 yds/gm), while also ranking 13th in all of NCAA FCS Football in total offense.
In the classroom, Horn boasts a 3.943 GPA - the highest on the Catamount football team - while majoring in Philosophy. He was also named to the SoCon Academic Honor Roll in 2007-08.
