Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina and North Carolina have inked an agreement for two nonconference football games as a part of both the 2017 and 2018 schedules it was announced today. WCU will travel to Chapel Hill for the first-time to face the Tar Heels on Nov. 18, 2017, with a second game scheduled for the following year on Nov. 17, 2018.
The WCU-UNC game is the second contest on the 2017 schedule to already be unveiled. Back in late March, the Catamounts announced the 2017 season-opening trip to Hawai’i to face the Rainbow Warriors. The 2018 meeting in Chapel Hill is the first game to appear on that year’s schedule.
The 2017 meeting on the gridiron will be the first for Western Carolina against the flagship school of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system. WCU has also announced two-game sets against other in-state system schools with North Carolina State in September, 2019 and August, 2024, while also opening the 2016 season at East Carolina.
Including two games scheduled against Southeastern Conference (SEC) foes this season, WCU has inked contracts for two Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents in each of the next three seasons. The Catamounts travel to Tennessee (Sept. 19) and Texas A&M (Nov. 14) this year with directional foes East Carolina and South Carolina on the schedule in 2016. WCU also has the Hawai’i and UNC games listed on the 2017 docket.
