Former Catamount Football Player, Xavier Godard, Dies in Drowning Accident

Aug. 30, 2007

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina family was saddened on Thursday morning when it learned that former Western Carolina football player, Xavier Godard, had passed away Wednesday evening in a drowning accident. The incident occurred at Cedar Cliff Lakes in Jackson County, according to sources.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007 beginning at 1:00 pm at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm just prior to the funeral

Godard played football at Western from 2002 through 2004 as a receiver and return specialist. He amassed 838 receiving yards, including career-highs of 459 yards on 38 catches and six touchdowns in 2003. Returning kickoffs, Godard recorded 1,191 career yards and two touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return for a score against Georgia Southern in 2003 making him one of just two Catamounts all time to go 100-yards for a score (joining Harvey Walker, 10/9/1976 vs. Jacksonville State).

Godard is survived by his mother, Germaine, his wife Andrea and one-year old daughter, Jasmine.
