Aug. 26, 2008

Student-Athlete Roundtable Podcast with Linemen Singletary, Orr, Furmage and Bradley

WCU's Updated Two-Deep vs. Shorter College Get Acrobat Reader

Cullowhee, N.C. - With just two days left before the new era of Catamount football, Western Carolina head coach Dennis Wagner took part in the Southern Conference's weekly football coaches' teleconference Tuesday morning talking about Thursday's match-up with Shorter College. Also, linemen James Singletary, Keanon Orr, Jeff Bradley and Bobby Furmage sat down with co-hosts Heather Swayne and Jessica Jackson and talked about the opening game in the latest edition of the Catamount Student-Athlete Roundtable podcast.

Fans through the gates on Thursday night will receive FREE Bam-Bam Noisemakers to help bring in the new coaching era with a bang. Explosions will not be restricted to the turf and the stands, though, as WCU will sponsor a post-game fireworks show following the season-opener.

The season opener will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network with an air time of 6:00 pm on the following stations: WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee; 680 AM WRGC in Sylva; 920 AM WPTL in Canton; 1480 AM WPFJ in Franklin; 1590 AM WBHN in Bryson City; and 1600 AM WTZQ in Hendersonville. Fans can also tune in online by visiting www.WWCUFM.com or www.WRGC.com.

Below is an excerpt from that brief telephone conference:

Statement about season against Shorter College:

"It seems like camp has been going on forever and we are looking forward to getting our first game under our belt. Having the game in the middle of the week should create some excitement on our campus and have a lot of students there in support of our team. We are just looking forward to the opportunity to get our season rolling."

Talking about quarterback situation:

"All three guys are capable of leading our football team, but at this point we have chosen Andy Horn who is a fifth-year senior. He will be handling the reigns for us, and we feel comfortable with the two guys backing him up and we want to hopefully get in situations where we can use those other guys. Andy has had a great fall camp. We charted all the statistics and looked at pass completions and interception ratio and just all the things you need to look at for a quarterback, and I think Andy will be the best guy to put our team in the position to win football games."

NOTES:

* Marks the first-ever meeting between Western Carolina and Shorter College in any athletics contest ... Shorter is just the second NAIA school Western has played since joining the SoCon in 1976 - the Catamounts defeated West Virginia Tech, 47-3, back in 2002 in the home opener for then fi rst-year head coach, Kent Briggs.

* Western Carolina is 12-20 in season openers since joining the Southern Conference in 1976 ... WCU has won three of its last four season openers after falling on the road at Alabama last season, 52-6, to start the 2007 season ... Of the 12-20 record in season opening games, Western Carolina is 9-1 when the game is played at home and 4-19 on the road.

* Since moving into E.J. Whitmire Stadium in 1974, Western Carolina has posted a record of 26-8 in home openers ... The Catamounts have won 10-consecutive openers at home since 1998, including last year's, 33-20, home victory over Presbyterian ... WCU has won 15 of the last 16 home openers dating back to the 1992 season.

* Thursday night's game marks the beginning of the WCU coaching career for Dennis Wagner ... Hired on Dec. 31, 2007, Wagner was introduced to the Catamount family on Jan. 4 ... He is the 12th different head coach in Western's history.

* Western Carolina first-year head coaches have combined to go 4-5-2 in their first-ever games dating back to 1931 ... Bob Waters - WCU's all-time winningest head coach - posted the best-ever first season by going 9-1 in 1969, opening the year with a victory.
