CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Western Carolina football team enjoyed temperatures in the low 70s Wednesday afternoon as it began its regular season practice schedule. Two-a-day practices are over as classes for the Fall Semester began Tuesday on the WCU campus.

"Practice started off a little sluggish today, being that it was our first practice since classes had begun," said Catamount head coach Bill Bleil. "Our leaders did a great job of getting it turned around and we had a great practice."

"Usually kids struggle through that first day of class, but I was very pleased. They came out, competed and did a good job."

Before classes started the Catamounts had been practicing twice a day for approximately two and one-half hours each. The Cats will still practice for the same length of time, now just once a day.

"I think the kids respond better to one practice a day," stated Bleil. "They start to get their feet back underneath them, get their legs back and start to get theirenergy back."

The Catamounts will continue to practice all week and will hold their final scrimmage of the season on Saturday, August 26. The scrimmage begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. Western Carolina opens its 2000 regular season on Sept. 2 against LSU. The game in Baton Rouge is slated for an 8 p.m. EST kickoff.
