2014 Catamount Football Position-by-Position Preview: Linebackers

Aug. 13, 2014

Over the next couple of weeks, will feature positional previews of the 2014 Catamount football team including the write-ups from the 2014 Western Carolina media guide, and Catamount Sports Network video features.

Western Carolina returns one starting linebackers from the 2013 squad in lone senior in Christon Gill. The Bridgeport, Conn., native started all 12 games in 2013, giving him 19 career starts. Junior Sertonuse Harris has converted to linebacker from defensive back, bringing with him a heightened athleticism, more experience - and 96 tackles in 2013, which ranked third on the team.

Second-year players like Tyson Dickson (23 tackles in 11 games), Tommy Tate (two tackles in 11 games) and Avery Worsham (five tackles in 12 games) all got valuable experience on defense and special teams in 2013.

Another upperclassman, senior K.P. Hicks, saw action in 10 games in a reserve role at linebacker. WCU also gets back redshirt junior Coleman Cunningham, who is coming back after off-season surgeries.

WCU will look to its handful of newcomers to both add depth and gain experience for the future during 2014. Two linebackers that took redshirts last season - Stedman Lucas and Daniel Riddle - should add depth after a year in the Catamount system. The two returning redshirts have had strong preseason fall camps to date.

Newcomers Kendall White (Jacksonville, N.C.) and Breante Glover (LaGrange, Ga.) will push the returning players for playing time.

Christon Gill returns as WCU's leading tackler, finishing second on the squad in 2013 with a career-best 101 total hits including 49 solo stops and 2.5 tackles for loss ... Gill ranked sixth in the final SoCon standings with 8.4 tackles per game;

• Prior to the start of fall camp, Sertonuse Harris converted to linebacker from defensive back with Bryson Jordan taking more of a safety/defensive back role entering 2014 ... Jordan ranked seventh on the 2013 squad with 53 total tackles including 20 solo stops in his freshman season.
