Catamount Football Fall Report #2: August 6

Aug. 6, 2012

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina tried to continue its preseason practices on Monday afternoon at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field, but was chased from the field just 30 minutes into the fourth session of 2012 due to rain and thunderstorms that swept through the region.

The squad took to the field wearing helmets and shoulder pads for the second time this preseason just before 3:30 pm amidst a slight drizzle. Those showers turned into a steadier downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning, driving the team back to the locker room.

Making the best of the situation, the offensive and defensive units split time between the Ramsey Center Auxiliary Gym and watching film by position. The defense took to the gym first for a walk-through with the offense using its time to cycle through over 30 plays out of various formations.

Just after 5:00 pm, the athletic training staff cleared the team to return to the field as the lightning had left the area, but the Catamounts were again greeted by a steady rain. Following a warm-up session, the team worked through individual position drills and one-on-one skel work before coming together for a brief scrimmage.

All told, between the two attempts, WCU was able to be on the turf right at an hour and 45 minutes.

Four quarterbacks continued to take reps in the spread formation with redshirt sophomore Eddie Sullivan seeing the bulk of the action. Sullivan was joined redshirt freshman Jawan Simmons and true freshmen Troy Mitchell and walk-on Jonah Duggan. Michael Helms Jr., took reps with the wide receivers during Monday's session.

The Catamounts remain relatively healthy with only four players held out or limited in Monday afternoon's practice.

WCU continues practice on Tuesday afternoon with the first fully padded session scheduled for 3:30 pm. A full recap of the first practice in pads will be made available on Tuesday evening following the scheduled two-hour session.

Highlights from 7-on-7:
* Three quarterbacks spread the ball around to eight different receivers including running backs Shaun Warren and Darius Ramsey ... Tight end Nate Stephenson also hauled in a pass working against the defensive unit;

* Garrett Brown caught as pass from Jawan Simmons over the middle amidst the teeth of the defensive secondary coverage ... Jacoby Mitchell caught a pass near the sidelines, dragging a toe to keep both feet in bounds to complete the catch;

* The defensive unit came away with at least eight stops including forcing incomplete passes or covering well enough downfield to force the quarterback to scramble;

* Freshman Jaleel Lorquet came away with a pass break-up and an interception during the 7-on-7 drills.

Highlights from the Short Scrimmage:
* On the opening drive of the non-progressive scrimmage scenarios, running back Michael Vaughn broke the first of two long runs with Darius Ramsey busting through a hole on the right side for the second ... Ramsey later added another nice run from scrimmage with Jamil James also catching a pass;

* During the progressive scrimmage, the offense moved down the field into scoring position thanks to a pair of long runs by Shaun Warren and a subsequent first down romp by Ramsey ... Simmons found Tyler Kilpa on an out to the near sideline before Michael Vaughn finished off the

*Defensive highlights included Andre Shishkin getting quarterback pressure and batting down a pass at the line ... Lineman Bevans Robbs also recovered one of the two fumbles as the offense put the wet ball on the carpet twice.
