Cullowhee, N.C. -
Sunday was a busy one for the 2013 Western Carolina Catamount football team. In addition to throwing on the shoulder pads for the first time this preseason for the third practice of 2013, the Catamounts also held their annual photo day, taking the team, position and updated head shots.
The football team hit the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field at 10 am on Sunday morning for a two and a half hour practice session in helmets and shoulder pads. After a lunch break, the team reconvened where they were addressed by Fred Goldsmith, a former head football coach and advocate of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Following a brief media instructional session with representatives of WCU's Office of Athletic Media Relations, the team donned the purple and gold uniforms for the first time since the annual Spring Game for photo day. Players and coaches alike took team and group pictures followed by head shots.
After Sunday night team meetings, the Catamounts return to practice on Monday, Aug. 5 for a practice in shells beginning at 3:30 pm. WCU is slated to practice for the first time in full pads this preseason on Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 3:00 pm.
Through the first three practice sessions of the 2013 preseason, the WCU Sports Medicine staff reports that the team remains relatively healthy. The athletic trainers have only treated three injuries aside from the occasional cramping. Senior wide receiver Jamil James suffered a slight knee sprain with redshirt freshman offensive lineman Andrew Potts injuring his ankle during the Sunday morning session. The only other issue has been a shoulder strain for freshman Ryan McLaughlin.
Fans can keep track of WCU's preseason activities through the Catamount Athletics social media outlets on Facebook (fb.com/catamountsports) and Twitter (@catamounts). CatamountSports.com will be updated throughout fall camp.
