Three Catamount Football Games in 2014 SoCon Package

Western Carolina and third-year head coach Mark Speir open the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at USF on ESPN3.

July 17, 2014

Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina will have three additional football games televised as a part of the 2014 Southern Conference football package that was announced on Wednesday. In all, eight league games will appear on ESPN3 while an additional six games will be available on the newly formed American Sports Network (ASN), an initiative launched by the Sinclair Broadcast Group (

WCU's broadcasts as a part of the league package begin on Sat., Sept. 27 with the conference meeting between the Catamounts and the Furman Paladins in Greenville, S.C., on the American Sports Network. WCU will host the Wofford Terriers in Cullowhee on Sat., Oct. 11 on ESPN3 with a 3:30 pm kickoff, with the Nov. 8 meeting at Samford to air on the ASN.

Kickoff time for WCU's game at Furman was also bumped to 3:30 pm to accommodate the ESPN3 broadcast.

To date, WCU will be featured on broadcasts four times this fall with the trio of games in the conference's package added to the season-opening broadcast at USF on ESPN3 which was announced back in mid-June.

The overall TV package begins with the first conference game of the season on Sept. 6 when Furman travels to face Mercer. That game will be Mercer's first contest as a SoCon program. The broadcast schedule runs for 10-consecutive weeks beginning Sept. 20 with WCU a part of the first double-header Saturday on Sept. 27 at Furman and again on Nov. 8 at Samford.

The final weekend of the regular season on Nov. 22 also features two games, including the "Military Classic of the South," when The Citadel visits VMI - the 70th meeting between the two schools. That game will air on ESPN3 while Chattanooga visits Furman in a game that can be seen on the Sinclair affiliates. The Mocs and Paladins were Southern Conference tri-champions with Samford in 2013.

"This is the most robust TV package Southern Conference football has enjoyed in quite some time," said Commissioner John Iamarino. "We'll have at least one game broadcast in 11 of the 12 weeks during the season, and several dates will feature two games. We're very pleased to continue our relationship with ESPN and launch a new one with the American Sports Network."

In addition to the league's partnership with ESPN3, the conference has reached an agreement for a diverse broadcast package with ASN. As part of the agreement, a minimum of 18 Southern Conference events are tentatively scheduled to be shown on broadcast television affiliates throughout the southeast, including six football games during the upcoming season. Sinclair's broadcast stations will carry the games as part of their primary program lineup on affiliates throughout the conference's footprint.

Darren Goldwater returns to handle primary play-by-play duties for the league's broadcasts. The 2014-15 year will mark Goldwater's fourth year on the conference package after three years as director of broadcasting and play-by-play announcer for The Citadel. Former NFL linebacker Corey Miller will handle the color commentary duties. Miller, who currently serves as sports anchor and host with WACH-TV in Columbia, S.C., played collegiately at the University of South Carolina before spending nine years with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings.

ESPN3 is available in approximately 75 million homes to fans who receive their Internet connection from an affiliated service provider. The network is also available at no cost to 21 million U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel. ESPN3 programming is also available to subscribers through Xbox LIVE and through the free WatchESPN app available on Smartphones and tablets. The WatchESPN app is also available through Apple TV and Roku video players.

The American Sport Network consists of commercial TV stations owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group and reaches close to 40 percent of all TV households in the United States with 167 stations in 77 markets. A full list of ASN affiliates and a complete list of broadcasts will be finalized as the season draws nearer.
