CFPA 2013 FCS Specialist Watch List
Charlotte, N.C. - Western Carolina senior punter Clark Sechrest was listed on the 2013 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Punter Award Watch List. CFPA, the largest awards organization in Division-I college football, recently announced its watch lists for the upcoming 2013 season. The preliminary watch list at punter highlights 32 returning performers vying for the top individual punter award in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
"Congratulations to Clark Sechrest on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith. "Sechrest will be one of the nation's top punters to watch in 2013."
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
Sechrest, who transferred to WCU from the University of North Carolina in 2011 following his freshman season, took over as the team's primary punter a year ago. As a sophomore, Sechrest punted just five times with a long of 45 yards for an average of 36 yards per punt. He led the team in scoring in 2011, tallying 44 points in his first season in Cullowhee, going a perfect 32-for-32 in PATs while connecting on 4-of-7 field goals including a career-long 51-yard boot against nationally-ranked Wofford.
Last season, the Cornelius, N.C., native punted 64 times - second in the SoCon - and ranked fourth with a 41.9 yard per kick average including a career-long of 58 yards against Chattanooga. A total of 15 of his kicks tallied 50-or-more yards while 18 were downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Sechrest additionally punched through three extra points and a 36-yard field goal for six total points, giving him 50 for his WCU career.
Majoring in Engineering Technology, Sechrest boasts a cumulative grade point average of 3.877 and was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District III team as presented by CoSIDA. The left-footed punter was additionally named to the 2012-13 SoCon Honor Roll as well as to the SoCon's Fall Academic All-Conference team.
More than 130 CFPA recipients have signed professional contracts, and twenty-one have been first-round NFL Draft selections. CFPA recipients performing as NFL punters include: Bryan Anger (California), Sam Martin (Appalachian State), Chas Henry (Florida), Drew Butler (Georgia), Shawn Powell (Florida State), Quinn Sharp (Oklahoma State), Brandon McManus (Temple), and Patrick Murray (Fordham).
The full list of 2013 recipients, including the 2013 CFPA FCS Awards, will be announced on January 8, 2014.
