Keeping Up with Former Catamount Football Players; Cohen Signs with Hamilton of CFL, Spicer and McAlmont on TV Monday Night

May 23, 2008

Cullowhee, N.C. - Former Western Carolina wide receiver Eddie Cohen signed with the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League this week, while two former Catamounts - Michale Spicer and Kevin McAlmont - will take center stage in prime time as the New Orleans VooDoo host the Georgia Force on ESPN2 Monday night in Arena Football League action.

Also, former Catamount defender Rico Reese is playing in the arenafootball2 league with the Tennessee Valley Vipers.

Cohen, a 5-11, 200-pound native of Hilton Head, S.C., set a Western Carolina single-season record with 1,208 receiving yards and nine touchdowns with the Catamounts last season to become just the ninth WCU receiver all-time to breach the 1,000-yard mark. He surpassed former WCU great Gerald Harp's previous benchmark of 1,145 by 63 yards. A first-team All-Southern Conference selection at wide receiver, he was also a two-time second team All-American as tabbed by the Associated Press and The Sports Network.

During his four-year career, Cohen tallied 142 receptions for 2,173 yards and 15 touchdowns in 39 career games for WCU.

Former Appalachian State quarterback Richie Williams is also on the roster for the Tiger-Cats giving the 15-time CFL Grey Cup Champions a Southern Conference flavor on offense.

The Tiger-Cats open their 2008 season on Thursday, June 19. For more information on the Tiger-Cats, visit www.ticats.ca.

Spicer, McAlmont to Play on ESPN2 with New Orleans VooDoo Monday Night; Reese Playing af2 in Alabama

Michale Spicer (2000-03) and Kevin McAlmont (2002-05) were re-united in the Big Easy as members of the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football league. New Orleans (7-4) hosts the Georgia Force (6-5) on Monday, May 26th, at 8:00 pm ET Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Monday. Fans can catch the former Cats on ESPN2 HD.

Spicer currently has 17.5 tackles, including 12 solo stops and one sack from his position as a linebacker. McAlmont, an offensive lineman during his tenure in Cullowhee, continues to spend time on the offensive front for New Orleans.

According to records, Spicer and McAlmont are the ninth and tenth different Catamounts all-time to spend time in the AFL since the league's inception in the mid-1980s.
