Swain Middle GEAR UP Visits Cullowhee Photo Gallery
Cullowhee, N.C. - Members of the Western Carolina Catamount football team spent most of their scheduled off-day interacting with the local community. Several student-athletes spent the morning reading to children at the Cullowhee Valley Elementary school, while others spent time with students in the GEAR UP Program from Swain Middle School on WCU's campus.
GEAR UP - an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs - is a program through Southwestern Community College aimed at assisting youth prepare for postsecondary education. The program's goal is to help children make the right choices in working towards a successful future.
The students from Swain Middle spent time talking with the Catamount football players about the rigors of being a collegiate student-athlete, as well as steps they could take in preparing for high school and beyond. The kids also received a tour of the Catamount football locker room and weight room facilities, as well as spent over half an hour going through practice drills on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field with the players.
Currently at its mid-point of the spring, Western Carolina returns to the field on Thursday afternoon for practice number eight of the NCAA regulated 15 opportunities. Spring drills will culminate with the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 19th at 1:00 pm in Cullowhee. Festivities commence with the first-ever "A Taste of Tailgating" with local vendors providing free samples for those in attendance.
Be sure to catch Catamount football players at four area Ingles stores this Sunday passing out free reminder tickets to the April 19th Spring Game. Fans can mingle with the players at the Ingles stores in Canton, Franklin, Sylva and Waynesville, as well as the Wal-Mart in Sylva.
