Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina football completed their third scrimmage of the spring practice season in preparation for the annual Spring Game next Saturday, April 13 at E.J.Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field.

A much improved offense came out strong, scoring on the first drive on a carry by tailback Scooter Dalton. Quarterback Brian Gaither led the offense to start and went 11 for 14 on the day for 94 yards, including four straight completions leading to a 20 yard touchdown pass to receiver Brenden Roy. Senior quarterback Pat Cilento also saw significant playing time, recording four completions for over ten yards, going 7 for 14 with 69 yards and one interception.

The defense came up big on several occasions, including a 100 yard interception TD return by B.J. Jessup. Defensive end Rico Reese recorded two sacks for the day, and middle linebacker Rod Dunlap caused a fumble on the goal line to deny the offensive TD. The end of the scrimmage was spent working on their "red zone" situation offense.

"I thought they came out with good intensity today," said Coach Briggs about the scrimmage. "There were some instances where they lost their composure, but I thought they progressed well. Brian (Gaither) did a good job today, and the receivers did better as well. And John Bush did a pretty good job today at full back considering he was a linebacker until this week."

This was the first scrimmage without having the coaches on the field. The scrimmage started at 10:00 am and lasted an hour and a half.
