2008 Catamount Football Spring Football Roster - Updated April 6
Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina worked through its first Saturday morning session today at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field, again dodging rain showers that hampered athletics activities around the Valley this weekend.
The 20-session workout culminated with live scrimmage action between the offense and defense. Following the two-hour morning session in full pads, the team held an optional weight lifting session with nearly half the team participating with new Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Brad Ohrt.
"Practice really is going well," said sophomore running back, Willie Harper following the morning drills. "We are doing a lot of work at a fast pace or at game speed. Offensively, the coaches have been putting in a little bit every day as far as our schemes and plays. Everybody is excited and really ready to play - ready for the season."
On the defensive side of the ball, All-Southern Conference selection Jeff Bradley echoed Harper's sentiments.
"The intensity has really picked up this year," said Bradley. "There is a sense of urgency on defense with the coaches wanting us all to go to the ball and more drills working with formations in chaotic situations that make us think."
He added, "The system so far involves more blitzes, more stunts and movement which is also making us think more."
In injury news, the only two Catamounts held out of practice on Saturday were defensive end Brandon Drumgoole and offensive lineman Justin Johnson. Drumgoole suffered a slightly sprained ankle at the end of Thursday afternoon's practice, but is expected to be back on Monday. Johnson is dealing with a knee injury and worked out in shorts and a helmet all week.
WCU will take Sunday off with the student-athletes slated to have sessions in the weight room before returning to team practice Monday afternoon.
