Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina University Director of Athletics Chip Smith today announced the members that have been appointed to form the WCU Football Task Force. In addition to the 14-member committee, a general timeline was also released.
The group will be chaired by Mr. Jim Moore. Moore is a retired banking executive who has been closely associated with WCU throughout his life. He is a past Chairman Western's Board of Trustees and is currently the Chairman of the WCU Foundation Board.
Joining Moore on the committee are members who represent a various affiliations with the university. They are: WCU Board of Trustees members Teddy Phillips and Jerry Kiser; Catamount Club President Tobe Childers; Dr. A.J. Grube, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Gibbs Knotts, Associate Dean of the Graduate School and NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative; Dr. Justin Menickelli, Chairman of the University Athletic Committee; Dr. Bruce Henderson, Professor of Psychology; Cody Grasty, WCU Student Body President; Sharhonda Bell, President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; Reg Moody, Sr., owner of Moody Funeral Home; Jim Hartbarger, owner of The Jarrett House and former WCU coach; and Kirk Roach, former football player and member of the WCU Hall of Fame.
The committee will be assisted in its work by Mr. Buddy Sasser, who has coached at Appalachian State University, East Tennessee State University and Wofford College. Sasser has also served as the Director of Athletics at Wofford and Coastal Carolina University, and is a former commissioner of the Big South Conference. While AD at Coastal Carolina, Sasser was a part of the study that looked at the feasibility of starting a football program and is currently involved with UNC Pembroke as a consultant for beginning of its program.
"This is an outstanding group of individuals who have taken on this charge. I am very grateful for their commitment, and especially to Jim Moore for his leadership role," said Smith.
The committee will commence its work in early March. It is expected that the results of their work will be reported to Smith sometime over the summer.
