Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina seventh-year head coach Mark Speir today announced the addition of 16 student-athletes that join five early-signees and two mid-semester transfers, bringing the total of the incoming class to 22 for the Catamount football program. It is the second-largest incoming class for Speir and his staff since inking 24 back in 2013.
"National Signing Day is a culmination of a lot of hard work by our coaches, support staff, our faculty, and our University campus as a whole. A tremendous amount of time and effort by the WCU family went into assembling an outstanding group of student-athletes. The Catamounts got better today!" said Speir. "I would also like to thank our Catamount Nation -- you were instrumental in helping us by creating a game day environment that is second to none in the Southern Conference. That home atmosphere in Cullowhee left lasting impressions with many of our recruits and was a big part in their decision to come to WCU."
Breaking down the 2018 incoming class, 20 will enter as true freshmen with three junior transfers. Nine of the signees are from Georgia, followed by eight from North Carolina, three from South Carolina, and one apiece from Alabama, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
A combined 13 will play on the defensive side of the ball with nine lined-up to play offense and one specialist in a placekicker. WCU's incoming class features seven combined linemen -- four defensive linemen and three on offense. The Catamount offense picked up at least one player in each position group including two wide receivers, two tight ends, and a running back and a quarterback. Defensively, WCU brought in five linebackers -- three outside linebackers and two on the interior -- with a combined four defensive backs.

"In looking at the needs of our football team after losing so many seniors a year ago, this class really met some immediate needs of our defense while providing some outstanding talent and depth for our team on offense," Speir added. "I feel like the success that we've enjoyed over the past four years has really enhanced the caliber of student-athlete that we've been able to attract here at Western Carolina."
Combined, Western Carolina landed three players on National Signing Day -- four in the incoming class -- that were two-star recruits according to Rivals.com and 247Sports.com recruiting rating websites.
As per NCAA rules and regulations, WCU's National Signing Day list only includes those student-athletes who have signed an official National Letter of Intent (NLI).
