Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina will formally introduce its next head football coach in a press conference scheduled for 2:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 4 in the first floor Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Center. Dennis Wagner was named the 12th head coach in Catamount football history last Monday, Dec. 31 by WCU athletic director, Chip Smith.
Friday's event is open to the public with light refreshments to be served. There will be a special "meet and greet" session with Coach Wagner prior to the official conference at 1:30 pm where fans can come early to meet the coach.
WWCU-FM, Power 90dot5 in Cullowhee, which has served as the Flagship Station for Catamount Athletics for the past two seasons, will air the press conference beginning at 2:00 pm. Fans can also listen online at www.WWCUFM.com.
Wagner comes to Cullowhee with more than two decades of coaching experience, including seven as a head coach at Wayne State College in Nebraska. He turned around the NCAA Division II program which had posted a 2-29 record - including having dropped 11 straight - in its three seasons prior to his arrival. The Waverly, Iowa, native finished with a 44-37-1 overall record at WSC.
Wagner, who takes over for Kent Briggs who was reassigned prior to the Catamount's regular season finale in mid-November, spent the last four seasons at Nebraska leading the Cornhusker offensive linemen during the program's transition from the option-based offensive attack to the West Coast offense.
