Western Carolina Head Coach Mark Speir:
Opening Statement:
“I thought our defense came up big and played lights out; they just kept coming up big all afternoon long. The offense was productive when they needed to be, they moved the ball down the field and had some big plays. That was a huge run by Detrez (Newsome). We’ve got some issues with our kicking game that nearly cost us tonight – and we haven’t had those problems with our punt team this year. But, we’ll get those corrected.”

“This was a huge win today. We’ve got to parlay this, take this momentum and find a way to just win one more. Coach (John) Wiley has brought in the phrase, ‘One more again, baby.’ So we’ve got to find a way to get it one more again.”

On the passing of Cameron Brown:
“We found out this morning of the passing of our signee, Cam Brown. This win is for Cam. That play right before half, someone asked me who made that play – I said Cam Brown did. We talked to our players about digging deep inside like Cam did and finding something a little deep. This win means a lot more with the passing of Cam Brown; what a fighter, what a legacy, what an example for our football team. He’s up in the Good Lord’s arms right now saying ‘Go Cats’.”

“It’s pretty special – he passed at 3:45 am this morning and his dad called me at 4:01 am – just 16 minutes. And I said, if that’s not family, I don’t know what is. His dad was thankful for what the Catamount Nation had done. Just keep that family in your prayers. This one is for Cam.”

On next week’s meeting with Mercer:
“(Next week) is just as important as this one was today. I told the team, this is like Game 7 of that World Series. Those two teams played close to 180 games apiece, both of their backs were against the wall in that game 7. So, sometimes your back being against the wall is a good thing. Our backs were against the wall this week, and our players found a way to come on the road and get a win. This is a hard place to play. And to come and get this victory is huge.”

“We’ve got to get healthy – same old story. We’ve got a really good Mercer team coming to town for Senior Day. We’ve got 21 seniors that are going to be walking. But we’ve got to have our best week of practice.”

“I told the team to enjoy this win on the bus ride home; then we’ve got to get in the training room, get healthy. We’ve got a big week because Mercer is an explosive football team, and we’ve got to go win. We control our own destiny. We’ve been down that road before where you leave it to the selection committee – a bunch of men in Indianapolis. I feel like if we can go handle our business this week, that’s all we can do. I don’t want to leave it in somebody else’s hands to decide our fate in being able to go play a little more football.”
