Western Carolina head coach Mark Speir

Opening statements about Saturday’s game:
"Obviously we didn't play well tonight. Offensively, we had some nice drives, but couldn't come away with points. Credit their defense they did a good job. I thought our defense played well in the first half, and we gave up one big play action – but that is how Furman has beat people. In the second half, they came out and hit the big plays. We just didn't respond very well in the second half. Every time we got momentum going, we made a mistake. We were our own worst enemies. We had way too many penalties and mistakes to win a game of this magnitude.”

“They had four big plays and that is what option football is. We need to rebound and learn from our mistakes. I thought the defense played well. But you just can't give up the big plays."

On starting QB Tyrie Adams going out:
“Tyrie is a special player for us. I don't know the extent of it. He couldn't play the rest of the game. We will get him in here this morning to see how bad it was. We’ve had a ‘next man up’ mentality most of the year – but it is different when you lose your quarterback, and the elements didn't help. Ray (Smith) came in and did a good job. Just overall, we didn't play well tonight.”

On the rest of the season:
"If we are trying to control our own destiny, we have to go find a way to go beat The Citadel. Whoever we have at any position, we have to respond. We are going on the road against a good football team. We have to work to try to beat The Citadel."

Senior Cornerback Keion Crossen

About big plays from Furman offense:
"Furman is a great team, and they have the type offense they wait for you to make mistakes. One time you miss a gap or miss a tackle, they take advantage. That’s the type team you have to be very disciplined against.”

On the team’s approach to the rest of the season:
"You have to look at things you messed up and the things you did well – have a short memory. You have to play the next week and get after it. We have to get ready for The Citadel.

Senior Wide Receiver Terryon Robinson

On playing in Saturday’s rainstorm:
"It was fun to play in the rain, but obviously it was tough to get the offense going. We've been good with the deep ball all year, and it was tough to get that going tonight."

On starting quarterback Tyrie Adams going down to injury:
"We always talk about next man up, and that is what we had to do after Tyrie went down. (Backup QB) Ray (Smith) is very capable. We need to help him get some confidence with the first string offense and be ready no matter who we have in the backfield."
