CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) -- Scott Riddle threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score Saturday night as Elon held off Western Carolina to take a 38-36 Southern Conference victory.
Riddle hit Terrell Hudgins for two of his four scoring passes, the second of which was a 25-yard strike which helped the Phoenix (3-2, 1-1) SoCon) rally for a 14-13 lead at the start of the second quarter.
Riddle's scoring run on Elon's next possession raised the Phoenix's lead, but the Catamounts (1-5, 0-2 SoCon) came back in a flurry of scores before halftime. Jonathan Parsons kicked a 42-yard field goal with 8:13 left before the break, and Adam Hearns' 11-yard run with 2:13 left gave Western Carolina a 23-21 lead. But Riddle threw his third TD pass, a 2-yard play to Dorsey Taylor with 16 seconds left in the period to cap a 66-yard drive.
Riddle connected with Bo Williamson on a 53-yard play with 8 minutes left in the third quarter to raise Elon's lead to 38-23.
Hearns, who threw three TD passes for the Catamounts, hit Mike Malone from 17 yards out at 3:15 of the third period, and found Eddie Cohen for a 10-yard play with 13:38 left, but his 2-point conversion pass missed. The Catamounts had the ball four more times in the fourth quarter but never crossed midfield.
