CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) - Brian Gaither threw for 224 yards and three
touchdowns as Western Carolina held off The Citadel 28-21 Saturday.
Gaither threw an 11-yard TD pass to Lamont Seward and a 5-yard scoring
strike to Xavier Godard as the Catamounts (2-2, 1-0 Southern Conference) built
a 20-0 lead at halftime. Nicholas Wishart also had a 41-yard TD run late in the
The Citadel (1-3, 0-1) marched back in the second half. Bulldogs quarterback
Willie Simmons hit Scooter Johnson on an 8-yard touchdown pass to get his team
within 20-14 with 4:17 left in the game.
Western Carolina extended the lead to 28-14 with 2:26 remaining when Gaither
found Godard for a 62-yard touchdown play. Godard finished with three
receptions for 70 yards. Simmons got the Bulldogs within seven with 45 seconds
left on another TD toss to Johnson, but Western Carolina got possession of the
ensuing kickoff to seal the victory.
Simmons completed 23-of-38 passes for 323 yards for two touchdowns, both to
Johnson. Nehemiah Broughton ran for 57 yards and a score for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel outgained Western Carolina 425-365 and intercepted Gaither twice
but the Catamounts had three sacks and held the Bulldogs to 102 yards on the
