CHARLESTON, S.C. - Fullback Maurice Murphy ran for a career-best 135 yards and The Citadel's flexbone offense finally came to life as the Bulldogs beat Western Carolina, 17-10.

Western Carolina (1-2, 0-1 Southern Conference) had beaten The Citadel (1-2, 1-0) in their previous three meetings.

The Bulldogs' flexbone was pulled apart by the defenses of Clemson and Delaware in the season's first two games, both 38-0 losses. On Saturday, however, The Citadel started the game by marching downfield with 10 running plays, the final one a 14-yarder by Murphy for the score.

Murphy had 74 of his 135 yards in the opening quarter.

Western Carolina was down 14-7 at the half, but opened the third quarter with a drive to the Bulldogs' 1-yard line. The Citadel held and turned the momentum back up field with a 47-yard run by Murphy that led to a Brice Stefanick field goal.

The Catamounts' final score was Josh Jones' 40-yard field goal with 7:03 left.

Western Carolina had a final chance to score after Citadel tailback James Breaker fumbled the ball, but David Rivers' pass on fourth-and-24 was knocked down by cornerback Jay Ingram with 44 seconds left.
