Western Carolina '00

John Scott, a 2000 Western Carolina graduate, returns to Cullowhee for his third season, his first as the defensive line coach. He was the only full-time staff member retained from the previous coaching staff where he served two years working primarily with Western's defensive ends.

In the summer of 2008, Scott was among 26 NCAA football coaches to take part in the Football Coaches Academy, which is designed to reinforce key aspects of securing, managing and excelling in a head football coaching position within intercollegiate athletics.

Scott came back to his Catamount family after one season as defensive line coach at Norfolk State University. While there, the Spartans ranked 12th in the nation in pass defense, allowing just over 158 passing yards per contest.

Prior to his stint at NSU, Scott was at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he worked as a defensive line graduate assistant for two seasons. His duties included assisting the defensive line coach in practice, games and game preparation. He earned his Master of Education from U.L.-Layfayette in 2006. Scott has also coached on the high school level, serving as defensive line coach at West Davidson High School in Lexington, N.C., in 2001.

Scott was a four-year letterwinner (1995-98) as a defensive end at Western Carolina. Scott was a second-team All-Southern Conference selection in 1998 after racking up 17 tackles for losses. In 1997, he led all defensive linemen with 59 tackles, including 11 TFLs. Currently, Scott ranks 10th all-time on the Catamount career tackles for loss list with 31.

After completing his degree in communications from Western Carolina in 2000, Scott played three years of professional football. He played for the af2's Greensboro Prowlers from 2000-01, and was named his team's Defensive Player of the Year in 2000. He was also in the preseason camp with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes in 2002.

A native of Omaha, Neb., Scott is married to the former Stephanie McKoy, who is also a 2000 graduate of Western Carolina University. The couple had their first child, John Wesley Scott III, in March of 2005, and their second child, Juliette Alexis, was born on May 31, 2007.
