Brad Ohrt is in his first season at Western Carolina, joining the staff in the spring of 2001. Ohrt will oversee the strength and conditioning regimen for each of WCU’s 14 sports.
Ohrt comes to WCU after spending three years as assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Southern California. He worked primarily with the men’s and women’s basketball teams, while assisting with the football team. The men’s basketball team showed marked improvement in each of Ohrt’s three seasons, reaching the NCAA region finals in 2000-01 and seeing its first players drafted by the NBA (Brian Scalabrine and Jeff Trepagnier) since 1997.
A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Ohrt spent one year (1997-98) as head strength coach at Wingate University.
Ohrt is a 1994 graduate of Appalachian State, where he was a four-year offensive lineman (1991-94). He was a two-time first team All-Southern Conference selection — once as a guard (1993) and once as a tackle (1994). Also in 1994 — a year the Mountaineers reached the I-AA playoffs — Ohrt was named first team All-American.
Ohrt received his Master’s in education at the University of Kansas (1995-96). He oversaw workouts for the Olympic sports, as well as assisting with football.
Ohrt is married to the former Ashley Williams, who played volleyball at Appalachian State.
