Asheville, N.C. -
The Southern Conference today named its men's basketball Player of the Week for games played from Dec. 3 through Dec. 9. Kevin Martin, a 6-6, 170-pound freshman guard from Zanesville, Ohio, is this week's recipient.
Martin led Western Carolina to a 79-69 win at Florida State on Dec. 8. The victory was Western Carolina's first road win in 18 attempts dating back to February, 2000. Martin scored a game-high 19 points against the Seminoles, making five of nine field goal attempts and hitting two of four from 3-point range. He also registered his first career double-double with 10 rebounds while adding two steals.
Martin also scored a career-best 30 points in a 104-102 double overtime loss at Stetson on Dec. 6. For the week, Martin averaged 24.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, shot 88 percent from the line and averaged three steals per game.
Martin leads the Southern Conference in steals (3.29), ranks third in the league in scoring (19.9) and is sixth in free throw percentage (.857). He additionally ranks 13th in the conference in overall rebounding (6.4), while tying teammate Willie Freeman for third on the defensive rebounds list with 5.29 per contest. Through Martin's efforts, Western leads the SoCon in scoring (87.6), field goal percentage (.509) and steals (11.86).
The honor is the first for a Catamount since Jarvis Hayes was named Player of the Week to start the 1999-2000 season. Martin is also the second consecutive freshman to earn SoCon Player of the Week honors. Last week, VMI's Jason Conley earned the award.
