Cullowhee, N.C. -
According to the Dismissal Notice of Reinstatement received by the Western Carolina Department of Athletics on Wednesday afternoon, the charges against men's basketball player Trey Sumler have been dismissed. Pursuant with department and team policy, Sumler is reinstated and is eligible to resume competition immediately.
Charges are still pending against a second men's basketball student-athlete, Josh Mendenhall, who remains suspended from competition indefinitely pending the outcome of the legal proceeding. It is department policy not to comment any further regarding on-going investigations.
Sumler missed the first two games of the 2013-14 season due to a team suspension in accordance to department policies. The Catamounts earned home victories over Wittenberg, 77-55, and mountain-rival, UNC Asheville, 74-67, in the senior's absence.
Western Carolina (2-0) opens a six-game road swing tonight in Eugene, Ore., as the Catamounts face the 18th-ranked Oregon Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena. It is the first-ever meeting between WCU and Oregon in men's basketball - and just the second match-up against a current member of the Pac-12 conference all-time.
Wednesday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network (check local listings for availability). Fans can also tune in to the Oregon IMG Sports Network broadcast online. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm PT / 11:00 pm ET.
